Episode 116: The ’Burbs w/ special guest Sean Marz

On this episode, Sean Marz returns to the show to discuss 1989's black comedy film "The 'Burbs" directed by Joe Dante with Aaron and Derek. They talk about whether or not this counts as horror or horror-adjacent, the excellent comedic timing of Tom Hanks, Carrie Fisher and rest of the cast, and the nostalgic value of this movie. They also get into the themes of Americana, the horror of living in the suburbs, Joe Dante's ability of blending humor and macabre, among many other aspects of the film. Sean is about a nine on the tension scale. People who mow their lawn for the 800th time, and then SNAP? WELL, THAT'S AARON AND DEREK.

Dr. Jeff returns to the show to discuss 1990's medical horror flick "Flatliners" directed by Joel Schumacher with the Spoop Bois Aaron and Derek. They talk about Schumacher's wild career, certain lighting and aesthetics he brings out in his movies, and how this project came about. They also get into the medical inaccuracies, the way the plot handles near death experiences, the superstar lineup of the cast, among many other aspects of the film. Aaron and Derek will bring the equipment. Jeff will bring his balls.

Episode 114: Pieces w/ special guest Jonathan Nowacki

This episode, Jonathan returns to the show to talk 1982's Spanish-American slasher "Pieces" (Mil gritos tiene la noche "The Night Has 1,000 Screams") directed by Juan Piquer Simón. They discuss how this movie is trying to be serious despite the crazy and transgressive premise and how it accidentally becomes a parody. They also get into all the horror genres and movies it's riffing on, some of Simón's other work, Jonathan's response as a non-horror and movie watcher, etc. Jonathan will send you a case of lollipops! Aaron and Derek will be playing so much tennis it'll be coming out of their ears!

Episode 113: The Devil’s Backbone

This episode, Aaron and Derek tackle 2001's Spanish gothic horror film "The Devil's Backbone" directed by Guillermo del Toro. They get into a brief history of the Spanish Civil War, Guillermo del Toro's background and career, and del Toro's exploration of boyhood, fairytale and horror. They also talk about each character in the orphanage and what fuels their motivations, how well this ghost story functions within the Spanish Civil War, and many other aspects of the movie. Episode 112: The Wicker Man

This episode, the Spoop Bois Aaron and Derek cover 1973's British folk horror classic "The Wicker Man" directed by Robin Hardy. They spend a lot of time comparing and contrasting Sgt. Neil Howie and Lord Summerisle and how both are presenting dubious, religious exteriors. They also talk about the influence the film had on folk horror and pop culture, the creation of the fictious community, the menacing acting presence of Sir Christopher Lee, the wild mess of a remake, among many other aspects of the movie. Derek is fine, but his acceptability is limited. Aaron is even better, but not nearly as effective as the right kind of podcaster.

Guest and friend of the show Kelly returns to talk Sam Raimi's 1981 supernatural horror classic "The Evil Dead" with Aaron and Derek. They discuss how impressive the production was despite the many limitations, what makes this movie still horrifying under the modern horror lens, it's legacy in pop culture, etc. They also get into Raimi and Bruce Campbell's history, argue in favor of the film's competency vs the idea of it being endearingly amateur, explain the real life grossness of the gore effects, and talk about many other aspects of the movie. Derek and Aaron have become hosts to a Kandarian demon. Kelly awakened from his ancient slumber.

Episode 109: Angel Heart

This episode, Derek and Aaron get into 1987's neo-noir psychological horror movie "Angel Heart" written and directed by Alan Parker. They talk about Mickey Rourke's noir detective performance, how the film tackles 1950s period piece between New York and New Orleans, and the portrayals of spirituality and religion. They also get into the disturbing nature of the horror by the end, the differences between this adaptation and the book "Falling Angel" by William Hjortsberg, noir versus neo-noir, and many other aspects of the movie. Aaron doesn't know anything, he's from Brooklyn. Derek can be a mouthful in Manhattan.
